About Craft

This woodcraft has a beautiful and unique form of art that was mastered by Bastar tribal and it helps their livelihood. Some nearby tribes of Odisha are also influenced by this craft practices.

The Badhais and Muria tribes are making woodcraft from generation as part of their culture. They are making wooden sword, axe and other utilitarian objects for years. Later some decorative items such as animal and bird figure are added in it. They are specialist in elaborate ornamentation. They use teak wood, Indian Rosewood, whitewood and other finest wood to craft various handicraft items.

The designs are mostly carved by a red hot iron knife, or a nail. When the red hot iron implement is pressed to draw a particular design or motif, it burns the wood and makes a linear grooved impression. Here too they usually draw geometric patters, fish, snakes, combs, the sun and the moon. They didn't give any added colour. Also no machinary is used in the making process.
